Vegetables  by Sara Anderson (2007)

book jacket

I was just looking at new board books, and found one called Vegetables by Sara Anderson. I'm going to use it for vocabulary (rhubarb, artichoke, turnip) and what I guess might fall under narrative skills , by having older kids look at the different vegetables and tell me how to describe them (I'm planning on bringing some of the fresh veggies in, too, since we usually have some sitting in the kitchen waiting to be sliced and diced and devoured!). It's got a lovely rhythm to it, too, which would be fun to do as a chant with clapping or rhythm sticks

Celery, rhubarb, cucumber, bean,

Potato, tomato, red and green.

Artichoke, turnip, carrots and peas.

Onion, eggplant, pumpkins, please!

Asparagus, lettuce, zucchini, beet,

Broccoli, spinach, corn so sweet!

Green bean, radish, sweet potato, yam,

Cauliflower, cabbage, vegetables jam!

Ooh, and such phun phonological awareness (radish, artichoke, asparagus, cauliflower…I'd never noticed how fun vegetable words are - even the word vegetable!).
