Uh-Oh! by Rachel Isadora (2008)

Just right for sharing with a toddler group, this book shows the typical events of a toddler’s day, each one followed by a minor disaster. The “Breakfast” page, for example, shows him neatly eating on a high chair; turn the page for the “Uh-oh!” refrain and the picture shows that he’s dumped the whole bowl on his head. So each page turn gets a laugh from the audience, and they’ll join in with the repeated “uh-oh!’s” too. Since there’s no written description of the disasters shown, those pages are natural lead-ins to Narrative Skills as the kids describe what has happened. The child is African-American, so this is a strong addition to the still-too-small number of books that feature children of color and are great for storytime sharing. Isadora’s Peekaboo Bedtime and Peekaboo Morning have the same child and similar appeal.
