The Scariest Monster in the World  by Lee Weatherly and Algy Craig Hall (2009)

book jacket

Monster loves nothing more than to chase the forest creatures with his giant bristly club. But one he finds that he needs their help when he is stricken with a terrible case of the hiccups. The forest animals take pity on him and come to his rescue. They try all kinds of crazy ideas but nothing works until they hold up a mirror, scaring them out of him. Monster is so grateful that he decides to clean up his act. His slimy green teeth get a good scrubbing, as does his "wild and weird" fur and he no longer chases his new-found friends. This book is a wonderful addition to a "monster" storytime and would work equally well with stories about friends or feelings (maybe even oral hygiene!).

This book was a giant hit with my preschoolers. Action words like "thump" and "scare" are in huge bolded letters which makes this great pick for Print Awareness. There are, of course, many opportunities for some exuberant hiccupping as well, and what could be more fun than that?
