Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett (2007)

This book details the journey of a meerkat malcontent, who is in search of a more comfortable habitat.  As he travels, he sends postcards back to his family, postcards which are actually pasted into the book.  I read this with my preschoolers, and we talked about postcards.  Then I handed out stiff paper cut into postcard size and asked them all to make a postcard of their own, and send/bring it back to me that next week.  I said to the parents, "giving your kids opportunities to practice writing (or scribbling) is great for their letter awareness and their manual dexterity."
