Maybe a Bear Ate It   by Robie Harris (2007)

book jacket

When a young cat (?) decked out in pajamas (including individual ear caps!) gets ready for bed, the accoutrements include a book.  The first few pages show us the youngster enjoying the book in a variety of positions, but then "losing" the book when it falls to the side of the bed as she yawns.  The mystery of where the book has gone has many possible solutions:  perhaps a bear ate it or a stegosaurus stomped on it!  After much searching, she finds it tucked under her bed, where sharp-eyed readers might have spotted it at the beginning, and joyously returns to bed to fall asleep while reading.

This book could easily be used for print awareness , as there is little print on most pages, with certain words highlighted in a different font and color.  It is also good for phonological awareness , with small alliterations and rhymes such as "a rhino ran" and "high up in the sky". Print motivation is high due to the popular animals depicted, and by having the children participate in telling what is going on in the pictures.
