Higher, Higher  by Leslie Patricelli (2009)

book jacket

A big push from Dad leads a girl on a swing to shout "Higher, Higher!"  A page turn shows her higher than a giraffe; then a building, a mountain, and so on.  The pictures really tell the stories here, and there's a clue on each spread to help kids guess what the next illustration will feature.  But the big, bold appearance of the same words on most of the pages offers a good opportunity to focus on Print Awareness.  Kids recognize "Higher" as it's repeated severaly times, then may also notice when the word changes to a couple other "H" words:  "Hi" and "High Five" when the girl meets an alien, also on a swing set.  When she finally comes back to earth the story ends with another new word:  "Again!"

You can tell parents that this is a book their kids can "read" on their own once they've heard it, not because they can spell, but because they're learning how the printed words on the page tell us what words to say.
