Butterfly Butterfly: A Book of Colors by Petr Horacek (2007)

book jacket

This deceptively simple book has some rich early literacy elements.  A girl looks for a butterfly, but keeps finding other creatures instead, until finally she looks up and sees it.  That last page when the butterfly appears is a pop up that always delights the kids.  Meanwhile there's some rich Vocabulary with fun-to-say words like "wriggling," "scurrying," and "shimmering."  It's strong on Print Motivation because of the very appealing illustrations, small die cuts that reveal the creatures the girl discovers, and a silvery 3-d cover.  Kids want to get up close and touch and turn the pages and point things out.  You could read this twice in a row and no one would complain.  Many opportunities for Dialogic Reading:  kids guessing or identifying the animals and colors, as well as talking about the animals and what they're like.
