Aaaarrgghh! Spider! by Lydia Monks (2004)

book jacket

A lonely spider's attempts to become a family pet are thwarted until the family sees the beautiful webs she builds. This fun book has great opportunities for print motivation as listeners join in on regular refrains of "Aaaarrgghh! Spider! Out you go!" and with the silly, surprise ending, but it is also really effective for print awareness .  While we read the “Aaaarrgghh! Spider!” pages, I run my finger lightly under the words as I read them, emphasizing especially the “Out! You! Go!”   Then I’ll say “if you noticed the way I used my finger to point out the words – that helps kids to see that the black lines that make up the letters are different from the other lines that make up the pictures – and sometimes they will even pick out individual letters that they recognize, so you combine print awareness and letter knowledge in the same book!”
